It was a proud moment for the Etihad Aviation Group on the 30th of November, 2018, as the inaugural Etihad Airways flight to Barcelona took off from Abu Dhabi. The flight had several dignitaries, key members of the management team of Etihad Airways and media representatives on board. The flight EY49 marked the launch of the UAE national airline’s new route to Barcelona. Etihad Airways celebrated this special occasion by hosting a grand event at the historic 16th-century Gothic building, Capella dels Angels.
This event was attended by prominent members of the local government, diplomats, corporate partners, some key figures from the travel industry, and the media. On this occasion, the chief executive of the Etihad Aviation Group, Tony Douglas, expressed his gratitude to the Barcelona Air Route Development Committee for their support and warm hospitality. He also said that it was an honor for Etihad to play an important role in meeting the demands of the flourishing cultural and commercial links between the Catalonian region and the UAE.
Over the past few years, the number of people travelling from the UAE to Spain has increased considerably. This can be attributed to the Schengen visa waiver programme that was successfully implemented after its introduction in the year 2015 for the UAE nationals. Initially, the new route would be operated 5 times in a week. The daily operation is expected to begin from the 31st of March, 2019. With the new service, Barcelona has become the second Spanish city served by Etihad, which would complement the current daily service of the airline to Madrid.
